Ut serviam (in Latin, that I may serve you)
As part of the human race, I have always loved to consider why we are on this planet, and that is to help one another. As we all know, we live in a very hectic world where survival of the fittest seems to be the trend, and those who are disadvantaged seem to fall by the wayside. Some years ago, I had a spark of light in my mind and thought: What can I do to enable others who are transitioning through challenging times to feel better? Besides my giving attitude towards life, always being there for others, regardless of their circumstances, I felt I needed to complement it with further studies to better understand the nature of the human experience and what makes us “tick” as individuals. We face challenges that are often very hard to cope with, and seeking help when we are down is the first step in addressing them in a way that respects our individual, unique experiences. I am glad to have had the chance to study and start understanding and practising the humanistic person-centred approach to counselling, pioneered by Carl Rogers, the Godfather of counselling, back in the 1940s. We must listen to one another with respect, empathy, and an unconditional positive regard, and a framework to encourage self-directed change, often the most powerful motivator for change, can be the start of a meaningful therapeutic relationship. I would love to hear about your approach to life’s challenges and whether your hopes for change in your life grow from the understanding and support from others.
